Recognition of misunderstanding
We like to put words to what cannot be understood, to make it understandable in a way. But there are other watchdogs to look at what we can't detect. We could put poetry together, which can be an invitation that we stay looking at what we cannot understand. Recognition of misunderstanding is the starting point of the recent collection of Kangaroo poems, edited by Martin Etxeberria (Zarautz, 1974). Zarauztarra has also worked in other genres and is his fifth book of poetry.
The story that precedes 42 poems intends to suggest the aforementioned. He says that when the British Empire first landed in Australia, the conquerors stared amazingly at the unknown forests and asked the Aboriginal about their name. The answer was “Kan ghu ru”, and so it was called the animal, not knowing that in his language that phrase meant “I don’t understand you”.
These pages highlight the colmatation and darkness that come close to the edges of what is usually considered correct: yellow street environments, solitary ashtrays, broken crystals, reds of the carmine and blood and others adorn the images of the poem. Among them are those related to the body or, better said, to the flesh: in this environment appear the heartless loves and the ohais that are offended, as well as the writings to the sadness and to the reflection itself. Poems with religious dyes are also plentiful and striking, among which are those who deal with the same writing: “In the shadows of words / dig run / Jesus Christ as a hairstyling (…) / Because it is poetry / it allows us / unique hell”.
Everything mentioned, the collection is surrounded by beautiful references that promote the reader’s access, like the rest of Etxeberria: Pizarniken lanturuak, Txaikovski ezpatak, Buster Keaton without smile…
But there are also legends that offer the reader sosegu, such as Egunsentia or Terra incognita. Because, even though life can be without rains, “we are sure the earth will meet us / if we keep enough adrift.” Not everything is therefore hopelessness, because if we look carefully, we can understand that acceptance is also a means of resistance.
