Ping-pong ideas
A year and a half ago, the digital platform was created that offers free e-books in Basque Booktegi.eus, and in it you will find the book this week: Identity Theatre written by Lutxo Egia. This is a feature film by Galder Perez and Ane Zabala, who won the XIV Short Theatre Screenplay Award in 2016, awarded by the theatre group Kafe Bar Bilbao and tartean. The author describes it as follows: “It is a theater play about identities, written in surreal and highly comical keys. We live in a liquid age, but essentialist identities are also among us, more than we thought.”
In 2015, Lutxo Egia held Transitoak: a bi-lingual performance that he used to reflect on the linguistic identity. After that, several projects came to try to change the language habits, among them, the recently completed Euskaraldia. In this sense he wrote Identitartea in 2016 and published it in 2018. Meanwhile, in 2017 he started a second performance on identity: Transhipments: He is Me. The result will shortly be obtained in a small novel, according to the author.
We'll see two characters competing with each other, playing a badminton game. A few words will be launched and philosophical dialogues will be developed. These words will bring ideas, visions of the world, which will try to reflect the plurality of Basque society.
If creative works had bibliography, some would be easier to read, others would be prevented from intertextuality. In the text you can read “what we do are” or “the only truth is that there are empty practices”, but you have drunk from many theorists, thinkers and creators to do this work: J. Derrida B. Anderson, Z. Bauman, J. Butler D. Haraway, E. Ionesco, P. Tellery, or B. Atxaga, for example.
Through these two characters he faces different topics and metaphors to meet the Basque community and its members. The goal is to “feel the other”, to question what we know, to know what the truth is, and to laugh at ourselves with absurd humor. Hopefully soon we can see them incarnated on the table.
