“Metal sticks are seen now, but the hazel stick has been a perpetual tool in us”
- As a child he learned to make hazelnut sticks from Unai Zabala Zubelzu with his father. “As we went to the mushrooms, I remember going out to make sticks, when I was about ten years old or when I started,” he says. Over the years, my father stopped acting, but he decided to follow up. The 26-year-old, who has expanded the project through social networks under the name of Traditional Sticks of the Basque Country, explains that many people buy sticks from this account. He works alone, but he also gets help from his father.
Zabala highlights these characteristics of abrasion: that hard sticks come out of her wood, but at the same time they also have flexibility. “If I didn’t have that flexibility, it would break,” he adds. Wood from other trees, such as gorostia, has also been used to make sticks. It is a protected tree, however, and the Guipuzcoan has always preferred to use hazelnut. “I already know the areas where the hazelnuts are located, they are often difficult to reach,” he says. The young man adds that the cutting season is very important: he says that they should be cut between October and February, but only when there is a new moon. “If you throw it at a bad time, it doesn’t work, it has a lot of problems, it hits the pee...”
It is said that even in difficult places, cutting is the easiest task. “I usually make a lot of sticks, they’re in bad places and it’s really hard to get them to the car.” Once you bring them home, let them dry for more than three months. “They have to be left to dry for a long time because if they have moisture they are not corrected.” In fact, this is the next task: to correct the original form. To do this, he keeps them well attached to an iron pipe for about four months.
For the mountain and dealing with cattle
Nowadays most people use metal walking sticks to walk in the mountains, but many people around the farm believe that they hold sticks and that it is also widely used with cattle. As a tool that has always been used at home, the young man wants to keep it. “I like it a lot and if nobody does it, it will be lost,” he said. But he also says it’s important to know when and how to cut so you don’t get upset: “It’s actually good to make sticks because then a new one will come from that branch. But you have to be careful, you can’t get a lot of sticks out of a tree, you have to find balance.”
Zabala sells hazelnut sticks through social networks and in livestock feed and tool shops. “You can do it yourself, but it’s not just cutting, the whole process takes eight or nine months, it’s time. That’s why many people today prefer to buy,” he concludes.
