The Basque Parliament declares a state of climate emergency
- The Basque Parliament has committed itself to promoting initiatives and budgets to deal with the climate emergency in a way that "takes urgent action". The decision was taken unanimously by all the parliamentary groups at the sitting on Thursday.
In the first point of the motion tabled by EH Bildu on the development of greenhouse gases, in which all the groups have agreed on a compromise amendment, the Basque Parliament declared this Thursday at the plenary session held in Vitoria-Gasteiz the "climate emergency" situation.
Thus, as the Basque Government did in July and following the steps taken by several municipalities, the entity that brings together the autonomous representatives of Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa has taken a further step in the face of the climate emergency.
In the text adopted, the parliamentary groups have called on the Basque Government to incorporate "the climate perspective" in the 2020 budgets and to promote effective policies to advance "carbon neutrality" to 2040, when the plans so far have the goal of 2050.
EH spokesman Bildu, Mikel Otero, explained that in recent years gas emissions have not decreased, but have increased, specifically in the years 2016 and 2017 CO2 emissions have increased by 5.45% and are worrying data, as if the carbon neutrality date is brought forward by 2050, the trend should decrease by 8% per year: "The climate emergency is not an environmental problem, it is a major social and economic problem," he concluded.
Although the declaration has been adopted unanimously, there has been a margin for criticism and EH Bildu has accused the Basque Government of not having "credible planning" on the table. Elkarrekin We Can, for his part, has accused counselor Arriola of giving "baffling messages," suggesting that what we said a few days ago would be "a suicide" to change our economic activity. "I have bad news, not doing anything is an option," said José Ramón Becerra.
The Basque Socialists have recognised that "there is no longer any excuse" for dealing with the problem, and the PNV parliamentarian Irune Berasaluze has underlined the need to act with "honesty and seriousness".
At the last point of the declaration, the Basque Parliament has urged the Basque Government to agree on measures to deal with the climate emergency with other institutions and citizens through "extensive processes of social participation".
