Public job in Debagoiena to give encouragement to small producers
- It was a year ago that the project was implemented in Debagoiena. A worker has been hired to work alternately on small farming projects in the valley, thereby alleviating the workload for producers and dignifying the conditions. “They found that the sector was vulnerable and that there was a lack of relief at the Bergara Food Table, and the results of the Dignified research carried out by the Biolur association also showed this. From there came the idea of creating a job and it is supported by the local municipalities and the Rural Development Association”, explains Olaia Blanco Azpiri, an employee of the Orthulaedic Service.
The new agricultural post has been financed by the municipalities of the valley, and the Rural Development Association has been in charge of administrative and management tasks. Support was offered to projects in the valley, and Blanco is working with six producers who were encouraged to participate in the initiative. The main objectives of the project are to give encouragement to small producers and boost the relay in the sector, but also to boost the network between regional projects. “Doing the same person in different productions also makes the network, and there are things that have started to be done together, such as going in search of plants or activating the agroassembly,” explains Blanco.
Blanco is working on agro-ecological projects related to orthotics in Bergara, Antzuola, Oñati, Eskoriatza and Izurtza: “We organize a calendar of one month or two months in contrast to the producers, they tell us the day that best suits them.”
The replicable model
The member of the orthulaedics emphasizes that not all productions have the same needs and the number of hours that he dedicates to each one. “In some projects they have the possibility to fill vacations between members, but in others they do not, because only one person is working or because they have a great workload. On the other hand, not everyone owns land and infrastructure, or has the same work capacity,” he says. The management of the work is carried out by the worker, but a monitoring committee composed of two producers and members of the rural development association was set up from the beginning, which is responsible for the care of the worker and the monitoring of the work.
The promoters believe that the project can be transferred to many other places. “Agriculture contributes a lot to society and is in a very vulnerable situation, it is a precarious sector, producers have to include many hours of work... so I think it is important to allocate public money to this type of projects as well,” concludes the farmer.
