So far, Nicusor Dan, who has served as mayor of Bucharest, has won the Romanian elections with 55% of the votes. Dan presents himself as an independent, with the support of certain pro-European parties – most of them on the right. Although the candidate of the Alliance for Romanian Unity, George Simion, has initially claimed to have been a fraud, he has subsequently admitted to having lost the elections. Compared to the first round of the elections, the far right has increased by four points and the turnout has increased by twelve points (from 53% to 65%).
It was an unexpected victory for the mayor of Bucharest. In the first round on May 4, Simion won 41% of the votes and was presented as a favorite in the second round. Dan was second in those elections with 21% of the votes. Third, Crin Antonescu was the candidate of the parties of the coalition of the Romanian government, obtaining 20% of the votes. As a result, the day after the first round, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu resigned and the Social Democratic Party left the government coalition.
An honest Romania
Nicusor Dan has used the slogan "An honest Romania" in his election campaign. It has promised measures such as the digitization of the state, the reduction of bureaucracy, the promotion of meritocracy in public office and the modernization of the judicial system. In international politics, it coincides with the increase in military spending that the European Union has established. He is also a supporter of Donald Trump and plans to tighten ties with the United States and reduce its dependence on China, according to EFE.
Russian intervention up and down
If the elections have been crossed by a cause, it is the alleged intervention of Russia. The pro-Russian Calin Georgescu won the elections in November and the results were annulled by the Romanian Constitutional Court, believing that Russia acted in favor of the winner. Dan now denounces: That Russian Pavel Durov, owner of Telegram, sent a message to all Romanian users saying that a Western European government had asked to limit the visibility of the country’s conservative voices before the vote. The message contained an emoticon in the form of a loaf of bread, suggesting that this government is France; as Soy has received it.
