- I had made a sketch of spring flowers for today’s article, because I like to write looking at the cycles of nature and bring back the era in time but in the time I’ve been writing it I’ve learned that often the subject cannot be chosen by oneself, because life brings other subjects.
I've seen my ten-year-old niece, who lives on the farm, upset. Learning English is not what you love the most, this is not his cup of tea. The teacher tells him that if he does not learn English there will be nothing in life, because the products he produces on the farm will not be able to be sold all over the world. I would have been thinking that this might be motivating, I don’t want to see bad faith but I would like to highlight the ignorance, arrogance, fog and danger behind this phrase. A ten-year-old boy has no argument to answer that yet, but I've been wondering if we know what those arguments are.
We have to eat local, seasonal and produced without agrotoxins and not the hydroponic tomato brought from the greenhouses of Almería all year round, for us and for our land. There seems to be a need to make visible the carbon footprint, price destruction, exploitation and contamination of agrotoxics that underlie this model. We must build a sustainable and healthy local food system and not increase the trade in food brought by air. The English can take advantage of this trade, of course, but it will pay for the planet and our health from the skin. This has always been important, but because of the severe climate change, it will become increasingly indispensable.
In the same way that we consider it normal to eat bread produced in our own country with vegetables and fruits, we should consider this as normal, but the nefarious policies carried out to destroy the primary sector have led us to such ignorance. It is useless to invent the golden seals of the denomination of origin if we eat contaminated food of poor quality produced in the day to day abroad. The globalization of food does not imply health and realizes that food should be our first medicine than medicinal plants.
It's also arrogant to pretend that someone is going to be alive for knowing English. It should be shown to the children that great languages have been and continue to be constructive empires and, above all, oppressive. Our late father was playing with the wooden ruler of La Salle in Andoain, breaking his nails so that he could reject the Basque language and learn Spanish. In today’s schools it is not played but it hurts, because the existence of languages more important than one’s own cannot be taught with good.
On the other hand, children are also taught that there must be someone in life, whatever that may be. We do not know if it is for these people of teachers to have no one on the farm and to live on the farm. Through the promotion of local food and the transformation of the consumption model, I think of the Food Zone, Ereindajan, Cultivar or Elikaenea and all the producers behind them, among others, who are working for food sovereignty. Those who probably don’t use English on a daily basis but for me they are a model of success. So dear teacher, respect please.
