The committee set up in the last seven decades to analyse sexual abuse in the French Catholic Church revealed a dramatic fact in autumn last year: 330,000 minors were sexually abused. The Sauvé report concluded the survey carried out for two and a half years. The commission immediately asked the Catholic Church "to assume its responsibilities" and "channel economic reparation". Now, the diocese of Baiona, Oloroe and Leskarre will spend 250,000 euros, according to Urdin Euskal Herri Irratia.
Of these 330,000 attacks, 216,000 are channelled by priests or clergy, which accounts for 65 per cent of the cases, and the rest have been by those working in the various structures of the Catholic Church. About a third of the attacks are rape. The authors of the Sauvé report have highlighted the "systemic" component of the problem when communicating the data.
This study also reported some attacks in Iparralde. In fact, between 1950 and 2020, thirteen priests and ecclesiastics attacked sexually in the diocese of Baiona and at least 25 if attacked. But there is more, because others have been reported since the Sauvé report.
In the ARGIA magazine (No. 2,813) published this week we received the interview of Aldués Gaby Etchebarne. For many years, being a serora, she denounces the sexual assaults that occurred within the Catholic Church: "The young serora who had no power to say was not raped! Could have been raped by the bishop! They say that the bishops of Lourdes did things like eleven. I say that they are more than eleven. I don't have any tests, but I know the priests did ugly things, with boys and sero! They told me. Now they say that they have found the bones of the children on the convents' lands, the priests make the seroras children! ".
