The Basque Government urges the City Council of Pamplona to continue making progress
- The decision by Judge Antonio Sánchez to suspend children’s classes in Basque has been considered a serious one by the citizens who met this afternoon in the Town Hall.
Asier Biurrute and Garbiñe Petriatik speak on behalf of the Pamplona Dialect: “We want to highlight the value and importance of this decision. In fact, it was a significant step in guaranteeing the right of the citizens of Navarre to know the local language. Even more appreciating his contribution to start reversing the unjust and disastrous exclusion suffered by Pamplona in 0-3 years. Those of us who have gathered here would like to convey to the City Council of Pamplona our request and support to continue making decisions in this direction.”
The Pamplona Basque Language, Observatorio de Derechos Lingüísticas, ELA, LAB, EILAS and Sasoia groups were the conveners of the meeting. Among the participants were Solartxo Ruiz, Miren Arano and Dabid Anaut, parliamentarians of the EH Gathering.
“The institutions that have been in the hands of the UPN for many years have attacked the right to live in Basque. Now we want to denounce the reprehensible strategy of judicially scrapping every step that the institutions of change take in the guarantee of rights and social justice,” they added.
“People are discriminated against when they are denied the opportunity to study in Basque. And this reproduces social inequalities because they acquire more knowledge than others. We therefore demand that the institutions of Navarre take firm decisions to guarantee rights. Including the law that will give us adequate legal protection”, they have promulgated.
They add that it is no coincidence that this ruling was issued at the time of the enrolment of children ' s schools. “They have a clear objective: to generate discomfort among the population, to confuse the Basque language with media noise, to ultimately try to distance the population from the Basque language,” they said.
