We have also on previous occasions mentioned in the Basque letters the development that has been given in the books for young children for a few years. We have commented that women are gaining more and more weight in children's literature.
This Martin would be the clear reflection of these two ideas. A beautiful album, with the idea that counts well invented and structured, that last year received the Lazarillo prize in the Spanish state, and that was created by two well-known authors.
“Martin is my best friend. But Martin is not like everyone else. Or that’s what others say.” With these words this story is addressed; with those words and with the image of a party. There, the viewer will not know who the narrator of this story is, nor who Martin is. But as the leaves move forward, when the narrator’s account follows his path, we will meet Martin, who is “special”, “different”, who does wrong the calculation, but who knows by heart the menu of a whole month, who loves untouched hugs and likes repetitive things.
The reader will soon see that we are dealing with a work on the difference and integration of the different. In addition to knowing the relationship between Martin and the girl who tells us the story, we will know the weaknesses and abilities of the boy, as well as the affection between them, although Martin likes another girl and not the one who tells us the story.
Alaine Agirre reveals the whole story through a few sentences. Maite Gurrutxaga offers complementary information through illustrative illustrations, and so, through what the text says, and what shapes the image, we will be getting to know Martin's story. With affection, reinforcing the value of feeling and the individual: “Martin likes repetitive things. (…) I once explained to him that butterflies also like to change appearance. Since then I draw butterflies with earrings, but as soon as I turn around, I put a hat on top.” That's Martin, a butterfly with a hat. Like everyone else, butterfly, but with hat. And to reinforce that idea is impressive the figure of Maite Gurrutxaga, dozens of butterflies, all the same, made by the narrator… and one, with the hat that Martin has put on his head.
The end of the album leaves us with some sweet feelings, because Martin has gone to a special school, but also because of Martin's behavior: “Then Martin came to me slowly and hugged me. It’s been a real hug.” Because the final idea is that we're different, but we're all different. “And the others are right: it is not at all like the others.”
