Sahara Marathon
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the complicity of the Spanish State, since Morocco occupied and colonized Western Sahara. Since then, some of the Sahrawi people have been living under unjust and inhumane repression, and the other, in the decade of Algeria or in the desert. When the Sahrawi people want to throw a curse at an enemy or enemy, they do so as follows: “God give you the thirst of the hungry.”
Fifteen years ago, since the Sahara Marathon was launched, and at the request of a friend, I participated in the first edition, making half a marathon. Since then, I have made a full marathon (2005), ten kilometers (2010), and five kilometers (2015).
During this time I have tried to own the situation of the Sahrawi people and the conflict it has with it. What older people! One more year, we have heard from young people’s mouths the ardent views in favour of the reactivation of the guerra.Dicen that the Polisario Front is also waiting for what the UN decides next April, and that it is ready to act indefinitely. In my humble opinion, all of that has more stupid than reality.
There is nothing in the world that favours the Sahrawi environment. The Sahara is more missing than ever from the conflict resolution agenda. The marathon is no longer news. I have been very clear about the number of security measures that have been tightened up. But it's not a sign of preparedness for the struggle, it's a sign of fear of infiltrations. Since they kidnapped three Mundubat cooperatives, the Sahrawi people have been living in fear of entering Moroccan hands or sabotage.
The greatest change has been detected in the life and organization of the camps. Where there are no more than stones, snakes and sand, external help is needed to be able to live: food, clothing, solar panels… But until now everything was provisional. At present, it cannot be ensured that this is the case. Refugee camps are becoming settlements. Like in Lebanon. In other words, the electricity grid is being organized. The Algerian Government is making an investment of this magnitude, a sign that the problem is going on for a long time.
The areas that recently formed some chiringuitos have become a mall almost of all kinds, including shops Carrefour.Los changes are also noticed in the jaimas.
