Euskaldunes and Basque
A couple of years ago, on these very pages, I wrote about the neglect of Basque politicians in general over Euskera. He considered as a paradigmatic and very serious example what had happened in the line of Arnaldo Otegi's book The Time of Lights. Gara’s director, Iñaki Soto, explained that “the accuracy that Arnaldo has in Spanish is evident that he is not in Basque”. And it seemed to be very quiet.
These days we have had another similar example. Manu Lezertua is reportedly to be named Ararteko. I do not know whether the merits and the professional curricula that this friend has are appropriate for that job, but I do see great doubts as to the social and linguistic suitability.
In fact, on the same day of publication, PNV parliamentarian Iñigo Iturrate said that the issue of Ararteko Lezertua is also Basque, but that it is not clear how fluent it is, as it has been many years out. Behind this supposedly naive comment, in my view, there is evidence of a nuance that is not the nuance of the worrying and serious: the indifference with our Basque language. How is it possible that the dominance of the Basque country to be Ararteko is not an essential condition, rather than being a “ere”? How is it possible that a Basque considers it normal that he has lost fluidity in his language for several years of stay abroad? In any case, the fact that one day has been “euskaldun” does not empower anyone to hold a public office in the people of Euskera, but their current skill.
In the non-political sphere, unfortunately, the same thing happens. After announcing the results of the Basque Government’s plan to promote the use of Euskera in companies, little progress has been made. The plan was approved in 2008, but 78% of companies still do not. In view of this data, and apart from the lack of fines for non-compliance with the law (which also gives for the debate), I find it very serious to note that we Basques are still not able to demand our linguistic rights through practice, that is, in Basque, and in this way, transferring companies that if they want to do business they have to use the Basque language.
