Barakaldo’s BEC will host the World Bank’s Innovate4Climate conference (WB) this year from 23 to 25 May. Against this, various agents and platforms have been organized in the Basque Country and have been called to mobilize.

The event will bring together authorities and heads of investment funds and private technology companies from different countries around the world on investment needs and possibilities to address the climate crisis.

No to the World Bank! platform

On the one hand, to the World Bank, no! on 5 May the platform was presented by press conference. The platform has placed a financial oligarchy at the meeting point: "The climate emergency is only an opportunity for the financial oligarchy to open up new businesses and markets." Examples are the renewable energy market, macro-projects that destroy natural environments, the search for new energy sources and the reconstruction of poor territories affected by climate change. Thus, the platform does not believe that the solution comes from the hand of supposed sustainable policies led by the financial oligarchy.

The members of the platform note that the origin of the climate emergency lies in capitalism, "due to the need for irrationality and constant accumulation of production that is its own". To cope with this, they consider "indispensable" to eliminate capitalism: "It is essential to organise production out of market power, to build a society that allows sustainable use of raw materials and a balanced relationship with the environment".

On 23 May, it was called upon to mobilize under the motto Fight against capitalism and the destruction of the environment. The demonstration will depart at 18:30 from Barakaldo Square. Your vision of the subject will be heard this week. On the one hand, on 18 May, at the round table "The capitalist destruction of the environment and the construction of a sustainable society". It will take place at 18:30 in the Municipal Center of San Francisco (Bilbao). The following day, 19 May, at the same time, the conference "Economic and political attack of the financial oligarchy" will be held in the Old Town of Bilbao.

On the other hand, the Charter of Social Rights of Euskal Herria, the Euskal Herria Planto a Capital platform and Jauziak Ecocities, together with many social and union groups, have called the organization against the BEC conference. In its appearance on 15 May, the World Bank has denounced that the Innovate4Climate meeting aims to cover in green the "direct responsibility of the World Bank for impoverishment and climate emergency", since the WB has funded the sprinkling of several countries since its inception.

They believe that fossil energies should be permanently abandoned and a "just and democratic eco-social transition" launched. Call on responsible administrations to listen to the proposals of social and environmental actors: "The eco-social transition must be carried out with broad citizen participation, respecting the political sovereignty of the territory itself".
