Report the closure of a shelter for homeless women in Barakaldo
- The Women's Advisory Centre, Argitan, has denounced that the City Hall of Barakaldo will definitely close the hostel for homeless women. It was created in January, but with the arrival of the pandemic it has closed its doors from March. In this regard, they have asked the City Hall to give a "dignified" solution to homeless people.
In a statement, Argitan pointed out that the Barakaldo municipal government team (PNV and PSE) has used the coronaviruses to "remove the only shelter that there was for homeless women and, therefore, are driving life back on the street".
Argitan's complaint comes after the municipal shelter created by the City Council was closed shortly at the end of March to deal with the state of alarm in the sports club of Lassasarre, where there are 36 men and 5 women, after at least two women have left "for fear of suffering male violence".
On June 10 the Lassasarre will be closed and the old hostel will open, "there is not even room to accommodate 28 people, as COVID-19 forces to maintain safety distances".
They have recalled that they have called for "time and time again" for the reopening of the exclusive apartments for women, "which was closed in March, supposedly temporarily, on the occasion of the COVID-19 quarantine". They add that the City Council has done nothing.
He has asked the City Hall of Barakaldo to "offer a dignified solution to all homeless people in Barakaldo, without discrimination of any kind and without derivation of responsibility to other public institutions".
The Argitan Association has provided women in Barakaldo free of charge with information on their rights, legal advice, social counselling and psychological support for 23 years. The center works by appointment via phone 944 782 102.
