Statements by agents before the demonstration in Bilbao
- Some of the agents involved in the mobilization in Bilbao have offered statements to the media before the demonstration was launched. Here is an excerpt:
Ainhoa Etxaide (LAB): “Most of them will be on the street again, but the main Basque institutions will be missing again. We denounce the fact that the PNV, the government’s main responsible, is not here. Today there were two options: to be in favor of human rights, to be close to the agents that represent the majority of the Basque population; or to slide with the unjust measures imposed by the Spanish and French states.”
More places to stay in Urtzi Errazkin (Etxerat): “The Basque society wants a just and lasting peace and for this we consider it essential to respect each and every one of human rights. Of course, we also want the rights of family and friends to be respected, we also deserve that this prison policy is a thing of the past.”
Maddalen Iriarte (EH Reunar): “The protagonist is the people who came here today called by Sara. I would like to ask for an exercise: to look in the eyes of the relatives who have come and tell them why they have to do it for weeks - thousands of kilometers a week and why they should also receive this punishment.”
Pello Urizar (Basque Government): “Every time this demonstration is held, malicious statements are made about its purpose, and I would like to say clearly that the objective is not the defense of ETA prisoners, we in EA have this clear; the objective is the defense of the rights of men and women in prison. These rights are recognized by Spanish legislation but not guaranteed by a political decision.”
Rosa Rodero (victim of ETA, one of those who carried the banner): “After what I have heard and read in the media, I want to point out that the reason why I am here is the defense of human rights. And especially the right of prisoners to be close to home. There is legislation that must be complied with, and I will defend it at all times.”
Little Doll (ELA): “The state’s prison policy is a policy of revenge. None of the state’s dirty war activists are in jail because it’s a matter of will. And the PP has no will to carry out political normalization in our country. In relations and negotiations with the State, standardization and the rights of prisoners must be made a condition, otherwise it will be very difficult to comply with these rights.”
