This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Bilbao History Symposium. With such an eloquent date of this celebration, it has been considered appropriate that the Basque Studies and the heads of the Department of Culture of the City Council of Bilbao give space and place, "they formed an important part of the population, the women who made history, evoking and paying tribute to them. Their involvement in the history of the city was commendable and remarkable, because it is often forgotten."

Throughout Bilbao’s more than 700 years of history, the role of women has been “unfairly excluded”. For this reason, the objective of the organizers of the symposium is to "recover the history of these women, in a personal or collective way, in order to highlight their role in the political, economic, cultural and social spheres in our city".

Therefore, this Symposium would like to rethink the History of the city of Bilbao from the point of view of the genre and, to this end, historians and people interested in the subject will have the opportunity to present, discuss and disseminate their original contributions.

In this way, around twenty researchers and experts, individually or collectively, will recover the history of women who played a certain role in the politics, society, economy and culture of our city.

The symposium will begin on Monday at 5:00 p.m. in the library’s event room. The inaugural conference, entitled Women and Repression in the Franquist Dictatorship, will be given by Mirta Núñez, Senior Lecturer in the History of Social Communication at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Director of the Chair of Historical Memory. One of the main lines of research of the teacher’s works, the focus of much of his work, are those who were victims of Francoism during the Dictatorship, emphasizing the most vulnerable: children and women.

Mirta Núñez graduated from the Faculty of Information Sciences of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1983 with her thesis La Prensa de las Brigadas Internacionales and in 1988 she read a doctoral thesis entitled La prensa de guerra en la zona republicana durante la Guerra Civil Española (1936-1939). Originally from Cuba, she is the daughter of Mirta Díaz-Balart, the first wife of Fidel Castro.

The other conferences scheduled for the opening day of the symposium will focus on the place occupied by women in the religious life of Bilbao in the 16th and 18th centuries, their participation in the so-called Zamakolada or the militancy and exile of the Bilbao socialist woman Teresa Nadal, among others.

On Tuesday, November 29, the sessions will begin at 5:00 p.m. with eight lectures. To begin with, Eduardo J. The historian Alonso will offer a conference focused on women entrepreneurs of the 19th and 20th centuries. Other works that will be presented will be focused on the figure of the writer Bizenta Mogel, who translated into Basque the work Carta Pastoral del Primado de las Españas (Pastoral Letter of the Spanish Primacy) published in Bilbao in 1820, in the work of women in commerce in Bilbao in the 20s of the last century, in the participation of women in the Bilbao movement for the Republic. The day ends with the conference 'Another history of the Basque woman', which will be offered by the Arab writer Toti Martínez de Lezea.
