Hundreds of people have linked the San Francisco School and the Pamplona City Hall with chains of guardasol asking for shelter
- To request a refuge for the school courtyard, hundreds of people from the San Francisco School and the Old Town of Pamplona linked the school and the Pamplona City Hall on Tuesday afternoon through a chain of Guardasol.
The chain of guardasol, which consisted of children, parents and teachers, was formed at 17:00 after the children left the school. It occupies Plaza San Francisco, Calle Zapateria and Plaza Municipal. The chain has been made in a joyful atmosphere, making the wave over and over again and shouting slogans: “1-2-3-2 cover our yard” or “yes, yes, yes, cover now” have been some of them. Already in 2003 they began to ask for shelter for the courtyard, they have had numerous contacts with representatives of the Municipal Government of Pamplona and Navarre, but they determined that they have not yet obtained shelter. In Pamplona, it was emphasized that, on average, each student has a patio of 22.37 m2 and in San Francisco 2.88 m2. “We ran out of space in eight out of 36 physical education sessions, with physical education sessions taking place in poor conditions, in the psychomotricity room – 63 square meters – and/or in the courtyard, when possible.”
They also have problems when it rains: "During the game our students and children are in galleries and/or classrooms, during the dining hours in the gallery on the ground floor, the extracurricular activities of the courtyard cannot be carried out, and the school celebrations - Olentzero, carnival... - are cancelled."
Asking for shelter for many years
The school has taken many initiatives around this demand. For example, in the 2012-13 school year, the entire courtyard was covered with canvas shelter made in the neighborhood. Also in January 2016 an attractive exhibition was held in the school lobby: The students of the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra showed twelve projects to cover part of the courtyard.
The Parliament of Navarre and the City Council of Pamplona have made several visits to the school. In January 2015, the Education Committee of the Parliament of Navarre had the opportunity to see the situation of the school on the ground. The Commission made the following request to the Government of Navarre to carry out a shelter project for the yard within three months. In March of this year, the Citizen Participation Committee of the City Council of Pamplona was present, where the members of the school's management explained the circumstances of the problems.
Artxanko and Lasa reported that although both institutions have shown understanding, they have never given a solution to the demands of the school. Faced with this situation, the school community has taken its demands to the streets for the first time, reminding the City Council and the Government that until they reach their goal they will also be on the street.
