Many animals use coincidence with the group as a survival strategy. This character has often been neglected, equating many collectives with herds, as a mass without its own character that must be guided. But the community, when it suspects the threat, knows how to use its capabilities to mobilize against the threat.
The next school year my daughter goes to school and there is a briefing for the parents. They have explained to us many things, two of them related to digitalization: that you can not use mobiles in the school and that they will lend each student a Chromebook.
In our country, it seems that in this community where we are parents, we have been gradually understanding the prohibition of mobile phones in school. In order to embrace this change, parents have not had to understand any technological knowledge, market knowledge or abstract elements. We have clearly seen that many parents and teachers have banned devices to avoid the dynamics associated with ubiquitous violence among students.
The Chromebook, however, is a different world, more abstract, the damage it can do is not so obvious, it is necessary to know a little about the market dynamics and how digitalization works to understand the damage it can do. In addition, they offer us the Chromebook disguised as a computer. How will the community of families perceive the risk if they have not separated from a computer the device linked to the tempted advertising business of the company Google? Also, how to tell a child that it will be different from the class if he is the only one in the room who will not use the Chromeebook? How to get the child out of the dynamic that the school has created and promoted?
I talked to the institute and they have no problem with my daughter using her home Linux computer instead of her Chromebook. But if the community does not clearly see the threat of algorithmic violence, and even if the way to combat it is not in their hands, it will not be easy to influence the collective intelligence of this country to ban Chromebooks and Google Classrooms in schools.
