Eight years after the creation of the Basque College, different social actors and representatives of different political tendencies have come together to reflect together on the future of the territory and to advocate for a new institution.
The unanimous approval of the motions at the General Regenerative Congress* underlines the need to move from the Basque College to the Territorial Community, so that the territory can acquire more competences and resources. Thus, the Junta platform follows the agreement reached in 2013 between Batera, the Council of Elected Representatives, the Development Council, the People’s Congress and the Chamber of Commerce. Although the characteristics of the Territorial Collectivity are still to be determined, the organizers have taken as an example the Collectivity of Lyon, which is the only one that brings together the competencies of a College and a Department.
Those who have spoken at the General Assembly have praised the work carried out by the citizen platform in recent years. In addition, a new Operational Group has been formed that reflects the diversity of the territory.
To achieve the goal set, Batera presents and votes on the road map of the years that have come. The citizen platform seeks to influence the electoral sequence that is conceived (local, presidential, departmental and regional votes) in order to establish in the first line the issue of the institutional future of the Northern Basque Country, whose objective is to generate a political and social majority in favor of it by mobilizing civil society and energies throughout the territory.
The joint citizen platform calls all citizens and agents of the territory to mobilize for the Territorial Community of the Northern Basque Country by participating in the dynamic (https://plateformebatera.org/)
*In 2013, the Joint Platform, the Council of Elect, the Development Council, the People’s Congress and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce jointly promoted a major mobilization for a Territorial Collectivity of Special Status in the Northern Basque Country. In 2017, the territory achieved historic institutional recognition with the creation of the Basque College.
Based on the work and collective experience that has been accumulated in the Basque Country, we reaffirm our desire to revive the demand for the institutional evolution of the Northern Basque Country, to move from today’s Basque Country to a unified Territorial Collective of Special Status.
We decided to reactivate the Juntos platform, which began in 2002, and to envisage a new phase of popular mobilization in favor of the Territorial Community of Special Status. As a result, we want to engage: to disseminate information about this institution, to participate in all the mobilizations that will be necessary for this evolution and to build together a new institutional stage for the Basque Country.
