Called by the platform Bidasoa de Salud, the citizens of the second most populated region of Gipuzkoa took to the streets on May 31, angry with the cuts that the hospital is suffering. Some 10,000-12,000 people joined the protest, according to the police, and the demonstration reached the city center: Plaza de San Juan in front of the City Hall, Paseo de Colón and Plaza de la Zabaltza.
Representatives of the platform warned of the decline of public health services in the region and proclaimed a decent service. Regarding the Bidasoa Hospital, they requested the immediate reopening of the child and youth psychiatry service, pediatric emergencies and urology. For health centers in the region, more family doctors and pediatricians were also requested.
The dismantled services have been redirected to San Sebastián and the consequences have been immediately detected by the population. Since the withdrawal of the psychiatric service, for example, the referral of consultations to San Sebastián has made many children and young people unable to join the appointment, or if they do, they have to wait for months for the next consultation, since the service in San Sebastián is saturated.
Suffocating to San Sebastian
In relation to pediatric emergencies, the one narrated by a mother on the day of the demonstration can serve as an example. The other day, the boy who is not even 2 years old had a reaction to playing in the river, he could not breathe well. The ambulance was called and, in the absence of a paediatric emergency service in Bidasoa, the child was taken to San Sebastian. He was able to be treated there on time, but the pediatrician's message was clear: “It’s a shame. This boy has had a half-hearted reaction; if he had had a serious reaction, he might have died on the road.”
More health services at risk
The Bidasoa Health platform recalls that the cuts are being made in different specialties, not only in the care of children: in recent years they have indicated a “significant reduction” in the care of radiology and pain unit, and that waiting lists in traumatology and otorhinolaryngology have “grown alarmingly”. The CSR recently denounced that the reduction of the hospital is “clear” and that the health of the inhabitants of Bidasoaldea is “being put at risk”. She adds that there are deficiencies not only in emergencies, but also in primary care.
