Suppose that capital encodes the limitless. I don't know who it is, but it's in the air. I find it strong, for example, that by the end of the 19th century, when Harvey writes, Paris was matched so that capital could circulate better. But it's the formulation of a Marxist geographer, who knows. Or I get sympathetic when Byung-Chul Han's Jeff Koons sculpture in Berlin establishes a connection between the i-phone and the Braziliang Waxing. But this is a pop philosopher, and who knows. I like the literary side. On the other hand, I think there are few doubts: we live in the age of planitude. Mirrored on flat contact screens, surrounded by wrinkle-free surfaces, hairless surfaces equate to right and left. This reality needs contrast.
I've chosen a superficial game: I've looked at the nonfiction books I've seen in the shop windows of two bookstores. One of my admired columnists comments on bestsellers a couple of times a year, presenting the best-selling books as a mirror of the German dominant culture. Please note in advance that you have not read them in full. I didn't even open them up. It brings me by title and, to the extent possible, I will give them with the literal translation of German:
A photo book with a sleek look: Civilization. How we live today. Below, the last Sennett: Open city. (I read no, but I heard him say straight away that this was the city of the future. As the opposite example, Haussmann did what he did in the 19th century in Paris and Shanghai did it in the late 20th century).
To the left – in the window –: From the ruins of the Empire: Rebellion against the West and resurrection from Asia. Further to the left, with a red and black and white design that mimics the aesthetics of propaganda art: Reinvention of the dictatorship. How China organizes the State of Digital Vesilancia and how it leaves us impacted.
In the second window, following the dictatorship: What does personal responsibility mean in the dictatorship? Written over half a century ago, Hannah Arendt is represented with more than one title. In the first store there was another about the political dimension of friendship: Friendship in dark times. Black letters on red background. In front, white and black on blue background: Why does the love of Eva Illouze end? Anyone who knows Illou knows that capitalism will not be left out of love life.
A booklet with a classic look on the nature and value of democracy in the yellow section of pocket. Not on the date of publication, but on the history of democracy, going a little further back: The Greeks and the invention of culture. How far can we go back? There was also a good edition of the Origin of Species of Charles Darwin. This curiosity brings us to the beginning. Darwin wondered why man has less hair than his ancestors. Is it a mark of human progress?
Contrary to what its origin could announce: Michelle Obama and her Becoming. Among the titles on Bestseller's lists, also in Germany, this is the only one that appeared in the shop windows.
Book sellers already do so as museum curators. You can't stop doing that work. They offer filters without algorithms. While they are there, on the other side of the window, the texts have no power. But someone has to cross the glass and show the speeches hooks to go the other way.
