Sanchez Asiain was never hidden
- José Ángel Sánchez Asiain is dead. Born in Barakaldo, his parents were merchants and he was professor, professor, president of Banco Bilbao (BB) and president of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya (BBV).
A pioneer of modern banking, he created a credit card and advocated a merger between banks. After failing with Banesto, he managed to merge BB and BV, uniting the different families of Neguri. Like every human being, he had lights and shadows. The discovery that BB had secret funds in tax havens was a sinister shadow.
I knew the banker up close, I had a personal relationship with him when I was the editor of Egin. I would like to highlight two positive aspects of his personality. First, Sánchez Asiain took very good care of his relationship with the press. Every time I had conflicting information about a problem concerning his bank – and they weren’t few – he made himself available to me, either with his friendly communication team or in a meeting. It was never hidden. He always answered. It was always put on the phone, which was unusual in the presidents of large companies. We had a different view of the social model and at the time I made strong criticisms of it, but it always respected and appreciated me.
Secondly, I think it is necessary to recognise his contribution to the financing of the two sides of the Spanish civil war. In his book La financiación de la guerra civil española, he received twenty years of research work and unpublished documentation. Important in the Basque Country were the collections in Navarre (such as the “revolutionary tax” controlled by General Mola), as well as the confiscations of property that took place in Bizkaia, mainly belonging to the Sota family.Goodbye, Jose Angel.
