200 victims of police abuse already call for recognition and redress
- Those affected by police abuses in the CAV between 1978-1999 can apply for compensation in the Basque Government since September last year. More than 200 dossiers have already been processed and more petitions are expected, as the victims have a period of two years to do so.
Police victims between 1960 and 1978 could also ask for compensation by 16 April, according to the same sources. As explained by the Secretary General for Human Rights and Coexistence of the Basque Government, Jonan Fernández, more than a hundred people have submitted the request.
Commission to assess each case
The Government has just approved the decree of the Valuation Commission, which will analyse the applications and decide in each case whether or not they are recognised as victims. It may also assess the compensation. The highest compensation (EUR 390,000) is for those who are recognised as having a severe disability and the lowest for those who are recognised as having a partial disability (EUR 35,000). The decree also provides for the right to comprehensive health care for victims who so request.
