Pello Urizar beats Maiorga Ramirez
- Pello Urizar will once again be the General Secretary of EA, after being elected by the EA Congress held yesterday in San Sebastian. He obtained 52.4% of the votes and his opponent, Maiorga Ramírez, 47.6%.
Although the internal environment of the EA has been calm in recent years, this time there has been a lot of competition, both in the choice of direction and in the political line. The main problem has been the location within EH Reunidos and there have been two main sectors facing each other.
The EH Bil coalition is rethinking its nature in order to become a stronger political force: it would continue to be a coalition, but it would strengthen its political structures, for example by appointing a general coordinator, consolidating its own leadership or creating a militant figure of the EH Bil, beyond the parties.
This process has led to the distribution within the MS. The sector led by Maiorga – supported by the party’s founder, Carlos Garaikoetxea – wants to bring together the party-based EH without further strengthening its structures; this sector sees the future of EA in danger if the EH Gather is strengthened. The EA of Pamplona, for example, proposed to leave the EH Bil, once the EH Bil has consolidated what it is, with the intention of making a coalition with it again.
In the end, both parties reached an agreement on the nature of EH Bil in the congress, but not on the direction, and the Gipuzkoan list barely prevailed. When the paper on the agreed political line was put to the vote, 76% left, 20% opposed and 4% abstained.
He will hold his Congress on June 17. If what has been ratified by the parties so far is approved, Arnaldo Otegi would be the coordinator of the EH Gathering.
