Authorities in several countries around the world raise 74 billion euros to find the COVID-19 vaccine
- The European Union has promoted cooperation among world leaders to find a vaccine that can be combated by the coronavirus. Countries outside the EU have also participated, although some of the biggest powers in the world, such as India, Russia or the USA, have not participated in it. In total, the revenue is EUR 74 billion.
The money raised will go towards the creation of a vaccine against COVID-19, which according to the EU will also go to the poorest countries. French President Emmanuel Macron said this: “Obviously the creators of the vaccine will be paid, but people from all over the world will be reached through the organization we decide.”
At the congress it has been agreed that the vaccine pharmaceutical companies will not lose their rights, but that they will have to put prices that will allow them to buy around the world.
The participants wanted to broaden the idea of unity, and several leaders agreed to point out that without mutual collaboration it will not be possible to find the medicine the patient needs. Macron has said that the vaccine "will not be anyone's" and the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has underlined the importance of unity. “No country or pharmaceutical industry in the world is capable of doing it on its own.”
In addition to the countries of the European Union (EU), Canada, Japan, Jordan, Norway, Israel and South Africa have also participated. China, after the EU has asked it to participate, has sent its ambassador to the European Union (EU).
But the EU organisation has not been the only organisation that has been organised for this purpose. India, which has refused to attend the Brussels meeting, has held a new meeting in which a number of Eastern countries, including Iran, have participated.
In the absence of major powers
Despite the spread of ideas of solidarity and cooperation, some of the world ' s major powers, such as Russia, India or the United States, have been lacking at the meeting. President Donald Trump said the vaccine produced by his country’s industry could be ready by the end of the year. However, some scientists do not see this plan feasible.
The role of the World Health Organization in the meeting has also been controversial. United States Last month they stopped paying their operating fee for the entity's relationship with China, which is where it resides. However, several European authorities, such as the Norwegian Prime Minister, Erna Solberg, have praised the mediation work carried out by the WHO and its health structure to deal with a health emergency.
Who to work with
Emmanuel Macron has explained that the organization that will be used for the production and distribution of the vaccine has yet to be selected. However, they have expressed their desire to collaborate with existing global health organizations such as the Red Cross, WHO and Gavi, mainly with the latter.
Of the 74 billion received, 4,000 will be devoted to vaccine research, 2,000 to treatments and 1,400 to the production of tests approved by the European Commission.
