Starting on 31 May, the trade unions ELA, LAB, CGT and ESK have called for four days of strike at the Michelin plant in Vitoria-Gasteiz. They are a minority representing workers, 12 out of 27 representatives of these four unions. The other trade unions, CCOO, UGT and CSIF, have not supported the call for strike because they seem to have accepted the latest proposal from the company management.
The four trade unions that have called for a strike represent 45% of the representation of the Works Council and will be “in favour of the convention we deserve”. Recovering purchasing power and the CPI is the main union demand, as well as the reduction of working hours, the suppression of additional working hours, the reduction of temporality and measures to improve health and quality of life, among others. The unions demanded a wage increase of 27% in four years, but the company management offered only a 12% increase.
On 18 May the Michelin workers made a massive mobilization at the entrance of the company. Subsequently, on Tuesday, 30 May, different mobilisations will take place. A concentration is called at the entrance of the factory from 13:00 to 14:30 hours and a demonstration will be held at 18:30 from Plaza Bilbao. The strike days will begin on Wednesday 31 May, 2, 3 and 5 June.
