The monument to Elkano de Getaria was placed before the city hall by the francoists
- On Sunday, the Spanish military will hold a Mass in Getaria (Gipuzkoa) in honor of Juan Sebastián Elcano, as part of the citizens’ protests. Elkano is a person to whom Spanish nationalism has always wanted and honoured. In order for Getharia’s “preached son” to be a symbol that must be revered, especially the tremendous work of the fascists has not been useless. The Plaza del Ayuntamiento is one of the main meeting points of the getariarras, as well as the main center of local initiatives, along with the pediment. This small square is called Gudarien Enparantza and in its center is a marble statue in tribute to “Juan-Sebastian de Elcano” (sic).
It is one of the dozens of places and honorable denominations in Getaria for the tribute to Elkano, but it is, along with the monument, the most known and significant of all. The friends of the Getaria Library have reviewed the trajectory of this State and have made it known in the article “Historia no es redonda” of Artzape magazine.
This white marble statue was made in 1881 by the sculptor Ricardo Bellver, commissioned by the then Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Spain, “Ministerio de Ultramar”. The State remained in Madrid for decades until, in 1934, with the Second Spanish Republic in force, it was transferred to Getaria, where the architect of the town council requested the State. However, its location is unknown. It's not clear whether she was kept somewhere or put in another corner of Getaria, but it's proven that she wasn't put in the present place of honor. That's because it was ordered by the people's first Francoist corporation.
During the war, on July 25, 1937, when Getaria was under fascist control, the Francoist corporation decided: Send a telegram of adhesion to Francisco Franco on the occasion of the anniversary of the fascist uprising and, along with it, place the marble statue of Elcano in the town square. Said and done. It was established in August and officially opened in September, the day that was then called Elcano's Cabalgata. Today, the Elcano Landing is called the popular theatre tribute of Elkano, which is celebrated every four years in Getaria.
Issue 349 of the journal Jaca Española collected it in September 1937 in Spanish: “On the Spanish imperial route, Getaria is one of the most important milestones. Today, 5 September, a simulation ceremony is held with total solemnity: The arrival of Juan Sebastian to his homeland, between applause and alive, a walk in carriage through the streets of the town. When Getaria joins the heroic feat of Elcano and honors every year the sailor born there in the sunlight, he keeps a landmark of the Spanish Empire clean and guarded.”
What the fascists put 82 years ago is still in the same place of honor. And it is possible that on Sunday the tribute that the Spanish military must pay to Elcano is below what is celebrated in Madrid.
