The latest announcement of measures was made by the French President, Emmanuel Macron. On Thursday, 1 February, Macron himself and the Minister for Agriculture will seek to renegotiate a number of measures with the European Union. Among other things, they will call for the fields to be fallowed and for the number of products coming from Ukraine to be reduced.
Last weekend Prime Minister Gabriel Attal focused on the management of the European Union.
Protest at the entry of Italy and Spain
EITB received statements from Prime Minister Gabriel Attal at the weekend. On Sunday, Attal offered a conference on independence and sovereignty. For him, especially Italy and Spain are making unfair competition against France. Products are cheaper to France and products from both countries have more flexible environmental measures. Attal has stated: “We will continue the fight against unfair competition. Standards (phytosanitary) apply to our farmers and not to others." According to the Prime Minister, at least 40% of fruit and vegetables are imported, mainly from Italy and Spain. It adds that the import rate is so because the environmental standards set by France become obstacles. It calls into question the management of the European Union and anticipates that it will propose “more measures” to members of the European Union to block French food sovereignty.
The agricultural sector has criticised various European Union treaties. One of them is the agreement with Mercosur. According to this, products from Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay are included in the European Union.
