Gordon Brown declares pro-independence self-government for Scotland
- Scotland would have competences in the areas of labour, agriculture, fisheries and/or foreign policy within a Federal Kingdom, as proposed by Brown. It would have its own international representation on these issues and would achieve a semi-independent status for Scotland.
After the Brexit of June 23, Brown proposes that the competences held so far by Brussels be held by Edinburgh, instead of London and in these previously mentioned areas, according to VilaWeb.
Brown says Scotland’s independence is harder to achieve than it was in 2014, but he has enacted constitutional changes that would leave the currency, pensions and security in the hands of the United Kingdom, but the rest would be taken care of by Scotland itself.
From 2007 to 2010, Brown was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He led the no-election campaign in the Scottish referendum and has also participated in the anti-Brexit campaign.
