One month after a major blackout in the entire Iberian Peninsula, the renewable energy generation and consumption cooperative Goiener and the cooperative telecommunications operator Izarkom wanted to explain to the press the contents of the manifesto Hurry the system they have signed together, turn on the alternatives.
In their appearance in Bilbao on Tuesday, the President of Goiener, Erika Martínez, and the Director of Izarkom, Iker Altualde, opted for sovereign and sustainable energy and telecommunications. They believe that instead of building centralized infrastructures, autonomous local networks should be created so that “power does not fall into the hands of a few.”

The April 28 blackout is said to have been the result of “vulnerabilities and dependencies” created by a system that seeks to “maximize” profits rather than a one-off event. In this sense, for both cooperatives, it is necessary to create a "more sustainable, democratic and participatory" model, recalling that the first step is to change consumption habits.
Thus, citizens and agents have been asked to reflect on the hands of the "critical" infrastructures and to adhere to the collective manifesto through the website piztualternatibak.eus.
Collaborating towards eco-social transformation
To avoid the recurrence of such a blackout, or to be prepared for it, they see the collaboration between the different actors in the transformative economy as indispensable: "Cooperatives need each other on the path of ecosocial transformation," said Altualde. In this sense, Goiener and Izarkom have launched a collaboration that is being studied in the future "to offer joint services or share resources".

For his part, Martínez said that it is necessary to build a more "resilient" energy and telecommunications system, stressing the importance of "finding and caring for good travel companions" for this.
As part of this collaboration, they will also work on outreach activities. On June 19, the two cooperatives will give a talk at 18:00 at the headquarters of Goiener in Bilbao.
