The Spanish army entered the city to crush the Bilbain uprising. It was three years in 1631, when the King kidnapped the salt of the Lordship of Bizkaia to turn it into a monopoly, with a huge increase in price. Faced with this, the citizens took the guns and faced seeing that it was a decision against the forces. The army under the command of Guipuzkoan Juan Alonso de Idiaquez, Count of Ciudad Real, arrested and executed the leaders of the rebellion. The increase in salt and the rebellion against it showed structural contradictions.
