Limit
I was born on the border. Well, technically in the hospital of Nuestra Señora de Arantzazu in San Sebastian, but it is understood: consciously I was born the world on the border. Not on one side or the other of the limit, on the same limit. Because for me the only thing there is is a consortium, a Eurocity, or whatever, made up of Hondarribia, Irun and Hendaia. Let's call Txingudi. I don't understand, I don't understand, as one without another, as a neighborhood of the same thing, if you want one more, another more livable, the third of bonds, the three also interchangeable. I can move from one side to the other with total naturalness – the color of my skin helps me, of course. The border would be precisely by going beyond one of these three for a Txingudi inhabitant. Miguel Sánchez Ostiz placed his world in the triangle Asturias-San Sebastián–Bayona. The proclamation of the Republic of Bidasoa by Pío Baroja is well known. It's more humble to my small homeland, to anchor in the world, where I come back again and again, made up of the shores of Txingudi.
I have started to talk about the border and Trieste, today in Italy, adjacent to Slovenia, has come to my head, a cross between three worlds: the Germanic, the Balkan, the Latin. And if you don't consider these three incomplete ones. Multicultural, polyglot, border, transnational, Claudio Magris would be the ultimate representative, but they are part of the landscape Italo Svevo, Umberto Saba, Marisa Madieri, Boris Pahor, James Joyce himself, who lived there for ten years. Txingudi, our particular Trieste, would also be simpler, represented by Irene Nemirovski, Carlos Blanco Aguinaga, Pablo Sastre, Marie Louise Legorburu, Extefana Irastortza. And a wonderful future: language, culture, the passage of identities, the reception center, flexible, permeable, open, the small homeland, anchoring in the world, a place that can come back again and again, made up of these corners of Txingudi.
