Zelaa applauds the fact that the proposal of the Department of Education complies with the Spanish Organic Law of Education LOE and the principle of legality. He was pleased that the draft did not include a reference to the fact that the Basque Country was divided into two States. He does not consider it appropriate to associate Basque culture only with Basque and has expressed the need to associate Spanish with Basque culture. He adds that the present presentation is a continuation of the curricula developed by the PSE itself since Fernando Buesa was Minister of Education.

He posed a question: What is the Basque Country? The decree also extends the request for clarification of the official use of the definitive term “Basque Country”. I agree with Isabel Zelaa and believe that the best and most direct way to deal with problems or disagreements is for each party to clearly define its positions and concepts. The PSE has done: In all the laws agreed with the Department of Culture, the Basque Country is replaced by the concepts of Basque Country or Euskadi.

It is also included in the Basic Education Agreement of the Basque Country: The Basque Country is a site of 21,000 square kilometers, with 3,000,000 inhabitants and 685 municipalities. The rest have to be clear about what they mean exactly when they say Euskal Herria.

Clarifying this could be a good starting point to start analyzing each curriculum to know who each one is made for, which Basque is considered and which is not; whether it is based on a political-administrative approach or whether it prioritizes a socio-cultural approach.

With a view to sharpening the positions and speaking clearly, I would like to add that the desire to ignore the fact that the Basque Country or the Basques are divided into two states expresses a desire to hide reality. And that doesn’t help much to advance in that chakras we live in. Because who could deny that we Basques have been divided?

We, in line with the Basic Education Agreement of the Basque Country, work for a cohesive society, not for the perpetuation of divisions. We also want to be clear about that!
