Some women who started feminism in Spain about thirty years ago opened a manifesto just before spring. We also signed another two hundred. The title is “A Feminism That Also Exists.” On March 18, the newspaper El País published an abridged version of it.

The Manifesto underlined how much has been done at the institutional level in recent years, how much legislation will be enacted and enacted to address the inequalities between women and men in order to alleviate the difficulties women often face in society. It was to be celebrated, he said, for a long time to officially raise issues that could not be removed from the corner of the house.

However, the manifesto pointed out that in the background of feminism there has been a debate about some aspects of the new laws and that only certain feminist opinions have been known, that feminism has spoken with one voice, but there are also other opinions.

For example, that there is a concern that the laws will not manage the lives of women too much, that is, the concern of overprotection, as if women were beings without independence... It is also dangerous to believe that only by law can life be changed.

The manifesto then expressed deep concern about the Women’s Institute’s comments on prostitution. The Institute views prostitution as a shameful and infamous activity on the path of the most puritanical feminism of the nineteenth century. This, of course, provides a unique excuse for the poor working conditions of prostitutes to remain the same.

Further down, it is said that the discrepancies created by the innovations in gender violence and divorce were so great that it is also possible to talk about different feminisms, different ways of defending women.

The drafters of the Manifesto strongly reject the idea that male domination is the most important cause of violence against women as a “masculine impulse of domination”. They also disagree with the increase in the penalty for the increase. Punishment is needed, but increasing it does not mean a solution in itself.

On the other hand, the manifesto now shows a consensus that no cause or culprit is needed for divorce. To regard women as minors would be what other feminists have advocated, always having to explain male guilt, in the hope that women will never find other resources.

The fact that childcare is not automatically given to the mother also looks good in the manifesto and it is not believed that there are always mothers closer to the children or that the interest of men who want to take care of the children is only money.

In short, we want to break the stereotypes of simple feminism that presents male-males and female-victims. The fact that women are considered victims does no good to women: it gives them a weak and sad image of themselves, of those who must always seek refuge. And there is not, in itself, the evil and dominating nature of men. Some characteristics of society disproportionately favor the belief of superiority of some men and some become real oppressors.

The right laws are an indispensable aid, but at least the signatories of the manifesto do not want an avenging feminism: feminism should not kill the oppressors, the goal of feminism is the end of these behaviors so that we have equal, healthy, respectful and, where possible, happy relationships.
