On 8 July, 1,500-2,000 young people met at the post-selectivity festival held in the Zarautz Malecon, in the bar area. The agent alleges that he surprised the festivities and that the youth were expelled by the Ertzaintza and by the municipal police officers. After that, the Ertzaintza and the Municipal Police were aware that the party was organized for the weekend and the ertzaina who spoke with Berria has confirmed that the Ertzaintza had prepared the operation.
The ertzaina has pointed out that the City of Zarautz could have prevented the celebration of the party. Buses and trains have been launched from Eibar, Elgoibar, Deba, Mendaro and other points in Gipuzkoa to the city of Gipuzkoa. The Ertzaintza points out that it was virtually impossible for them to expel people from the festive area and that the bars remained open until 6 a.m. The City Hall had set the limit until 3:00 in the bars and then the Basque Government put the limit at 23:00. The ertzaina has explained to Berria that the consistory tried to keep the bars open until 6:30 hours, but that the Basque Government has complied with the order. The ertzaina has recalled the main characteristic of the locality: “We know what’s in Zarautz: tourism and… everything has to go on like this.”
According to the newspaper Berria, the City Council did not answer its questions on this issue, as it considers that it has already talked about it.
In Zarautz, some 2,700 tests have been carried out, after converting them into one of the main focus points of Gipuzkoa. 80 people tested positive for PCR. The City Hall says that in Zarautz there has been no community contagion, nor re-outbreak.
