This year’s harvest breaks all records in Rioja Alavesa
- The Rioja Regulatory Council has already made its first valuation of this year’s vineyard harvest. He noted that "very good" results have been received. He added that in terms of quality and quantity, it has been "extraordinary".
In terms of quantity, they have broken all the records this year. In Rioja Alavesa, 92.9 million kilos of grapes have been added. Compared to last year’s figures, production is forecast to increase significantly, reaching 89.2 million kilos last year.
According to the Regulatory Council, the "unusual" weather in September and October has had a direct impact on these excellent results. In this connection, he underlines in his note released on Wednesday: "The climatology of the last two months has been very beneficial to maintain the extraordinary health of the grapes and, when each vineyard has reached the appropriate maturity, to be able to carry out the ideal selection process of the harvest."
The harvest of the past year began relatively early and was completed by mid-October. The peculiarity of this year, however, has been its duration, which has been extended for almost two months.
442.4 million kilos
In addition to the figures obtained in the region of Álava, the Regulatory Council has also reported data from all over La Rioja. In total, 442.4 million kilos of land have been collected from 62,641 hectares of land. Around the characteristics of the vineyards, grapes were harvested to produce red wine from 58,016 hectares; and from the remaining 4,625 hectares for whites.
With all this in mind, the Regulatory Council expects the production of 318.5 million litres of wine. The final results, however, will be ready by the end of February or March.
