Australia holds a referendum to recognize indigenous people
- The constitutional amendment will be voted on 14 October. Anthony Albanes, Prime Minister, has defined the day of the referendum as “an opportunity to unite nation”.
The Australians will vote if the Voice to Parliament committee is of a constitutional nature. The Commission would recommend to Parliament on matters relating to the aborigines and citizens of the island of Torres Strait. Under the motto Esan Bai, a six-week campaign will be held before the referendum by the supporters of the initiative. Over 50% of the votes to amend the Constitution should give its approval to the proposal.
Indigenous people account for 3.2 per cent of the Australian population, and according to socio-economic measurements their situation is vulnerable to the rest of the population.
Pat Anderson, one of the Aboriginal women leading the campaign, has pointed out that the majority of indigenous people support Parliament’s Voice Commission, because they see it as “a step towards improving their situation”. The ruling party is in favour of change. Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, leader of the indigenous affairs of the Liberal Opposition Party, pointed out that this is a proposal that will distribute the country of the Voice to Parliament.
