In January 2025, the Basque Government began to investigate two companies that manufactured optical fiber facilities and operated by subcontracting. The investigation was initiated as a result of a request for social security assistance from one of the local employees. The worker denounces that even though he worked more than ten hours a day, he did not have the means to "eat or eat." The victim claims that he was given false promises to regularize it, and was told that it could reach a salary of up to 4,000 euros per month, according to the Basque Government.

The arrested businessman is a 38-year-old man from Logroño, the main administrator of two companies that carry out the installation of optical fiber by subcontracting. The workers worked without being registered with Social Security and used fake cards from other people who were affiliated with them. In this way, the employer could employ several people under a single employment contract.

Supposedly, the entrepreneur acquired 75% of what he got from each facility. Of the 25% that was allocated to the workers, it discounted the 'expenses' of gasoline, housing, supposed debts and working without papers. In addition to the crime of trafficking in human beings for the purpose of labour exploitation, the police charge the employer with crimes against the rights of workers, illegal trafficking in persons, falsification of documents and other crimes.

Four others have also denounced

Four more have now been added to the complaint received in January, and the number of victims is expected to increase. The Third Court of Investigation of Durango authorized entries and searches in Miranda de Ebro and Logroño. As a result, it has been reported that a 32-year-old woman has been arrested by the Spanish National Police. The investigation is still open and it is not ruled out that "more victims will be found in other autonomous communities", as they have not yet denounced it for fear of reprisals.
