Peeled tombs and key stones
- The reviewer writes about the case of the priest Juan Kruz Mendizabal. Among other things, it deals with the activity of Bishop José Ignacio Munilla. In the article, he considers life as an opportunity to spread the message of Christians.
I have always been struck by this passage from the Gospel of Matthew (Mt), in which Jesus says one day: “It is not enough for me to say, ‘Lord, Lord!’ to enter the kingdom of God.” (Mt 7:21). There is also no need to insult the Pharisees by calling them to whitewashed tombs (23:27), or to warn the disciples to beware of the yeast of the Sadducees (16:6). The unacceptable news from the Diocese of San Sebastián in recent days has brought these statements to my mind, and I think it is necessary to bring some brief notes here.
Monsignor José Ignacio Munilla has been at the center of criticism since he took up the leadership of the diocese of Gipuzkoa, inside and outside the Basque Church. He has been considered the representative of the most conservative root of Catholicism, as well as rejected by Don Juan Kruz Mendizabal, who was appointed vicar general by him and who, together with a hundred other priests, demanded the removal of the bishop. Mendizabal, a whitewashed tomb, considered by the media as a “Basque sector” and member of the progree, who and some years ago “improperly touched” more than a young man; who lied to the Basque Country saying that he “did not know of any case of pederasty” in our country (Punto, December 2016), and through the mouths of his own victims, supposedly not loved like other priests (Nueva, 13/01/2017). The stone rejected by the builders has now become key (Ps 118:22): who and the “conservative” is the one who has heard first-hand the testimonies of the victims and publicly denounced them, and the progree, dismissed from office and under the supervision.
With all this, I think it is a good time to bring the most important Christian message: “Love the Lord with all your heart (Dt 6:5) and your neighbor as yourself” (Lb 19:18). Then we will understand that not everything is gold, and that 2,000 years ago, by law, we walk among false prophets. And like sheep without a shepherd in Gipuzkoa (Mt 9:36).
