Sentenced to 13 years in prison for the leaders of the Greek neo-Nazi group Egunsenti Urrekara
- After five years of trial, they have been sentenced to thirteen years in prison for participating in the process, including Nikolaos Michaloliakos, party leader, Egunsenti Urrekara.
Last week the court in Athens handed down a landmark judgment considering Egunsenti Urrekara a criminal organisation and this week the judges have imposed prison sentences against the leader of the organisation. According to the Ekathimerini newspaper, prisoners must be in prison for thirteen years: In addition to condemning Michaloliakos, the president of the court, María Lepenioti, has condemned seven other party members.
Eleven other former party parliamentarians have also been imprisoned for five and seven years in prison for a crime of integration into criminal organization.
The criminal investigation began in September 2013, when rap singer Pavlos Fyssas was shot to death by the Policia.Giorgos Roupakias has been convicted as a direct and complicit perpetrator of the aggression, and has asked for him to be sentenced to life imprisonment and to prison terms of between seven and ten years for his accomplices.
Golden Dawn became the country’s third force in the midst of the Greek debt crisis, reaching 300 seats in Parliament, but was not represented in the last elections. Last week he was identified as a criminal organization. The leaders have denounced alleged political persecution, while the other parties have publicly celebrated the sentence.
