Sources from the patriotic coalition explain that six months after painting the mural of the stairs, the government team of the PNV and the PSE-EE has decided to impose an economic sanction on the EH Bil for this initiative. The Council’s decision is aimed at “criminalising solidarity with the Palestinian people and punishing expressions of support for Palestine”.

They also recall that the City Council has not been able to "express any solidarity with the situation in Gaza and the West Bank: indeed, in the last year, while we are witnessing a direct genocide, the Governing Group of the PNV and the PSE has rejected all the proposals put forward by the EH Bila in this regard." Examples of this include the motion presented by EH Bila, the rejection of the request for the union of the Spokesperson Committee, or the vote against the amendment to channel humanitarian aid to Palestine in the municipal budgets of 2025.

"We do not understand this pessimistic attitude of the City of Getxo towards Palestine, when there have been agreements between the parties in other countries, or when, in the face of other international conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, the concentrations promoted by the City of Getxo itself have been called to condemn the war and express solidarity with the Ukrainian people," said the members of the Soonista party.

They also deplore the fact that the Getxo government group, instead of expressing its solidarity with Palestine, is prepared to "punish the pro-Palestinian protests, despite the fact that there have been 50,000 deaths and thousands of displaced persons in the last year."

Despite the sanctions, EH Bila insists that they will not stop talking about Palestine and continue to show solidarity and support for the Palestinian people, as well as denouncing the genocide being committed by the Israeli government. A meeting will also be held on May 28, at 8:00 p.m., on the same steps of Villamonte, to reintegrate what happened and show solidarity with the Palestinians.
