Bridgestone’s regulatory dossier receives the dismissal of 232 workers from the Basauri factory
- The regulatory dossier to be signed on Monday by CCOO, UGT and BuB will affect 420 workers of the Japanese tyre multinational Bridgestone in its factories in Basauri and Puente San Miguel, Cantabria. In a vote on Friday, 569 of the approximately 900 workers at the Basauri plant voted in favour of the company’s proposal and 191 against it. In the Cantabrian factory, on the other hand, 236 workers voted in favour and 131 against. The ELA and SITB will not sign the file because they do not accept "traumatic layoffs".
The regulatory dossier shall apply from 23 June. 420 workers will be laid off, 232 in the Basauri plant and 188 in Cantabria. The unions that will sign the report say that in the coming weeks, workers will be able to apply for pre-retirement and voluntary absences. Considering that "about 100 workers" in Basauri have enough to apply for pre-retirement, and that voluntary leave will also be taken by several, it is explained that the number of traumatic dismissals will decrease significantly.
In the company’s statement, the company alleges “the changes that are taking place in the European wheel market” and the sharp decline in both sales and production to lay off 420 workers. The previous proposal included the dismissal of 546 workers who, in the words of the CCOO, have managed to reduce the number "thanks to union pressure".
Data from recent years confirm what Bridgeston’s management has indicated: according to the company’s figures, sales in 2024 fell by 58% compared to 2023, i.e. from 841 million euros in turnover to 351. This trend has continued this year, with a turnover of almost 40 million euros less in January than in the same month last year.
The workers of the tyre company in Usansolo (Bizkaia) will not be affected by the regulatory report.
