53 workers have already died in the Basque Country, the last in the Murueta shipyard

On Tuesday, the 64-year-old operator died in Erandio, in the company Astilleros Murueta, when a metal plate fell on top. According to the CNT trade union, Ainair worked in a shipyard for the subcontracted company.
This union denounces that "for a long time they were alerting themselves" to the possibility of something like this, since in the last year they have denounced "situations and procedures that can pose a serious risk to the safety and health of workers". The CNT says that companies "prioritize productivity interests" and "normalize" non-compliance.
Black December
The month of December is being black in Euskal Herria regarding labor deaths: the last deceased has been counted in the Murueta shipyard in Erando and 53 workers have died working, according to the LAB account: 11 people in Álava, 11 others in Bizkaia, 14 in Gipuzkoa, 10 in Navarra, 3 in Iparralde and 4 working outside.
Last year, 69 people died as a result of accidents at work and precariousness and in 2020 there were 72. Despite their downward trend, they remain "shameful statistics" for trade unions.
ELA explains that workloads, rhythms, high-rise infrastructure work or the use of dangerous machinery increase the risks of accidents "if preventive regulations are not properly implemented".
The unions announce mobilizations to protest the latest death in Erandio and on Monday they will concentrate on the shipyard.
