French is the only language for official documents. It was the post-war period of the French Revolution and at that time it was a minority language in the Republic. Only a tenth of the French population was able to speak French. It was used as a political weapon to prevent the division of the French Republic. Eventually, they turned it into a state language, but under no circumstances did they take into account the landscape of languages. Basque was, for example, the language of fans.
