Information about Room in Rome. Directed by: Assisted by Julio Medem. The actors: By Elena Anaya, Natasha Jarovenko. I'm from Spain. 109 minutes.
Let's pretend that I'm Alba and you're Natasha. What does the name matter, between two strangers who have found themselves in Rome for a single night? I will be in the Basque Country tomorrow, and you in Moscow, and we will take advantage of the night to play, to fuck, to release passions, to laugh and sing, to tell invented lifestyles. But the game can slip out of hand when lies are mixed with truths, fiction with reality, sex with intimate feelings, and smiles with hidden sufferings. Because the shoulder of a stranger is often the most suitable to give way to the uneasiness that we carry inside. Physical, very physical is Medem’s latest project, emphasizing sexual intercourse, but the result is even more emotional, exploring people’s obsessions, feelings and pain as usual.
That is why, in this film that does not come out of the four walls of the hotel, the two protagonist women and their conversations have the full weight of the show. The intense and ingenious initial speech, playful with information, destiny and imagination, gradually loses rhythm and strength, and is too sweet, too sweet at the end, insisting on mutual love. All this, however, is filmed from the peculiar gaze of the San Sebastián director, who has transformed the work that seems to be done for the austerity scenography of the
dogma movement or a play (two women and one bedroom, not more) into a universe of its own: the elegant aesthetic that measures the smallest details and all the planes, the absolute protagonism of two bodies that reflect beauty, the inner world of women, the light and dark, the soundtrack chosen, the symbolism of pictures and images in the bedroom, the scene of the surreal in the bathroom, the touch of the painstaking camre in many times.
