Don’t most people use technology? For what reason?
Mostly because most of us don’t use useful apps. In order to have more and more applications in Basque, we must use the ones we have in Basque, so that in the future we do not have more and less applications. To advance in Basque, if there are no good applications in Basque, even if it is free of Basque, the tendency is not to use it in Basque but to use it in English, even if it is free of Basque. That is to say, people resort to facilitation and if we do not include in our minds the need to use what is in Basque, we will not be able to stabilize and ensure the technology in Basque.
Where is the key to changing the trend?
It’s about understanding the devices we have in our hands. The thing is not to press a button and that's it. We don’t know how the technology works. “Here’s the phone, there’s WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, agenda and others...”, we still have Mano, but we don’t know how to take advantage of their benefits, let alone use them in Basque. If we do not know how to set up a phone, and the good consequences of that, we will not do it in Basque. The first thing we have to do is learn how to use it in order to be aware of the benefits we could have in Basque. That's not elaborate enough!
What lucky people do you want to reach?
What I want is to reach those who want to live in Basque and help them to have the ability to access all the operating systems. A country that wants to live in Basque and through technology. In other words, we must turn the proclamation “we want to live in Basque” into “we want to live the world of technology in Basque”. I don’t know how many people are willing to live online. Those of us who want to live in Basque have expressed this desire in the streets, but not on the Internet and social networks. When we surf, if we do it in Basque, we are in favor of Basque, but we do not know how many we are, we do not see it, but if there is, in addition, a lot, then my goal, which physically manifests in the street, is to manifest and make it known through world technology.
The tech world is horrible, anyway.
"Unless people get on the Basque technology train, Basque will have no place in everyday technological life"
If I also say “a kind of concern” to the coming technological world, I am worried that the Basques do not use technology in Basque, that in the future they do not live in Basque in that world. It’s true, soon there will be screens in cars and/or in the washing machine and in the fridge. They will allow us to do a thousand things with great ease and agility. But these will be in English and if we do not learn to live technology in Basque, Basque will have no place.
Of course, I realize that new technologies are being developed to the detriment of the Basque press and books, but if we do not take the technology train, we will not live in the Basque language in the technological world. A minority will live, but most Basques will not.
Technology has brought us a lot of bad things, okay, but also a lot of good things. Through my speeches I want to help people who do not speak Basque get on that train. Unless people get on the Basque technology train, Basque will have no place in everyday technological life.
Are you optimistic or pessimistic?
I find people more and more interested. I’m giving more and more talks. More and more people are asking me about what is on the web. Of course, I don’t have enough power, I’m doing it alone and in my spare time, little by little, I don’t have a team behind me. However, people increasingly want to learn how to navigate through technology. He realizes that to make people there better, he needs to learn how to set up all the lucky devices. I would like those who have the power to take greater responsibility for it. It was my website Iparra.net at first and then it became Iparra.eus. I was a pioneer in that.
He has no financial support. He’s been spreading his social media project or word of mouth so far. The Website is operated by itself for no financial purpose. He learns and then attracts more and more people. It has had 30,000 entries in the last two years. Since Basque is pure, it is a great achievement. He is optimistic, as the number increases.
Iparra.eus had two ideas in the creation of the project, the promotion of the Basque language through technology, that is, the computer, the telephone and the advantages of the current device and application.
Under the idea, he has been thinking about Basques who have traveled around the world, such as those who have traveled to the United States. Those who own the culture there, and who want to preserve the original.
In the world, the Basque language was defenseless, and at the same time, it saw an increasing number of attacks against the Basque language, such as in Navarre, as well as in the North.
So he set out to connect the worlds here and there, especially to the younger generations. So he started from the bottom of the Basque Country and wanted to reach the Basques of the world. He began to expand the boundaries, installing the first applications, followed by operating systems and video tutorials. For example, the basic things people don’t know how to set up a computer or phone, and nothing to say in Basque.
It has brought a number of technological resources to help people who want to live in Basque.
