Celebration of UEMA 25.urteurrena in Aizarnazabal
- The Commonwealth of Basque Municipalities (UEMA) has organized an institutional event to celebrate its 25th anniversary, with the aim of "remembering the path followed in 25 years, highlighting achievements and informing about the challenges ahead".
Representatives of the 73 municipalities that make up UEMA will participate in the event. In addition, the event will be attended by members who have participated in the presidency and the board of directors of the Commonwealth during these years, as well as representatives of the Basque Government, the Government of Navarre, the Basque language, political parties, provincial councils and many other areas.
The event will take place at the Escuela Popular Basakaitz in Aizarnazabal at 19:00.
25 years of “fruitful” career
The Basque Municipalities Movement was created in 1988, following a motion presented by Euskaraz in the municipalities of the Basque Country that year. The motion proposed that the municipalities of the Basque Country work in pure Basque and was approved by 32 municipalities of the Basque Country.
In order to comply with what was approved, the municipalities began to unite. On May 5, 1991, the Day of the Basque Municipalities was organized in Aizarnazabal and the elected representatives of 19 municipalities participated in the assembly for the creation of the UEMA.
The Commonwealth was registered in April 1992 and became not only a legal entity, but also a public entity. It is currently made up of 73 municipalities, and Legorreta, Dima and Ziorza-Bolívar have also recently applied to join the Commonwealth, which will soon consist of 76 municipalities.
The most outstanding objectives of UEMA are the Basques of the municipalities, the care and development of the Basque municipalities and the awareness and empowerment of the local population.
