The environmental group notes that the documents they have obtained (248 pages in total) correspond to the round of negotiations between the United States and the European Commission held in New York from 25 to 29 April. “Agirio clearly demonstrates his willingness to put the profits of the companies above the interests of the citizens,” they denounce.
According to the first assessment released by Greenpeace, the documents do not mention the need to combat climate change or the General Exceptions rule of the GATT agreement. The latter allows States to comply with trade rules if the environment and the protection of people ' s health are at stake.
Greenpeace also points out that the precautionary principle in force in Europe is not mentioned at all. Yes, however, the US proposal to regulate dangerous substances, which would greatly complicate their prohibition.
On the other hand, the documents released show the power given to large corporations to participate in political decisions, they highlight. The negotiating groups “insist on the need for consultations with the industry”, says Greenpeace. A website has been created to view the complete documents: www.ttip-leaks.org.
