A conservative federal judge analyzes a petition filed by anti-abortion agents on Wednesday and asks him to ban the abortion mifepristone pill in the United States, according to Agence France-Presse.

The program led by federal judge Matthew Kacsmary, named by former President Donald Trump, has lasted for more than four hours. It is a matter of banning the sale of the mifepristone pill used in abortion processes and there seems to be a possibility to support the petitioners’ request and approve a federal measure, as reported in the Washington Post newspaper.

Last June the Supreme Court annulled the constitutional right to abort and since then fifteen conservative states have banned all kinds of abortions. Others, like Florida, are in a process of drastic reduction of this practice.

But this decision can affect women across the country – 500,000 women use the abortion pill every year – and states defending the right to abortion.

Millions of women against the decision

With messages like “it’s not your womb, it’s not your decision,” Women’s March activists were against the court. In the AFP chronicle, they have spoken to several protesters, and among others have denounced that there is essentially no scientific debate, as the opponents of abortion have raised, but that this is an absolutely ideological matter. In the words of another demonstrator, it is a great concern among women.

Without waiting for an in-depth analysis of the case, abortion opponents want federal justice to suspend the pill's permission throughout the territory. On Wednesday, they asked the judge to act quickly. The “pernicious effects” of this product have no limits and cannot “waste time”, according to attorney Erik Baptist.

On the other hand, lawyers from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have defended the safety of mifepristone, arguing that for 23 years it has been used by 5.6 million women and that it has generated very few problems (less than 1,500).

Status of the pill

In the United States, mifepristone and misoprostole pills have been used, authorized by the Food and Drug Administration Agency since 2000. According to the Guttmacher Institute, more than half of the abortions in the United States (53%) have been made with medications.

According to the AFP, when these two pills are used, abortions are very safe and effective. There are few complications such as severe blood flow, fever, infections, or allergic reactions.

The abortion pill is not the same as the "morning-after pill", as the first is taken after confirmation of pregnancy to interrupt pregnancy. The second is taken after an unprotected relationship.
