This first edition of the Zinebi First Film section, ZIFF, which will be extended to feature films in fiction, documentaries and animation, will feature nine films, five of which will be national premieres.

Based on its historical identity as one of the oldest and most important short film competitions in the world, Zinebi intends to continue supporting young producers and authors who want to take their first steps in the world of feature films after working on short films. On the other hand, through the competition, the audience will have the opportunity to get closer to the diversity of trends, styles and arguments of creation that make up the panorama of contemporary cinema.

Notable among the films selected are Ralitza Petrova’s Godless, winner of the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival (Switzerland); Ala Eddine Slim’s Akher Wahed at the Critics’ Week at the Venice International Film Festival, winner of the Luigi de Laurentiis Award; and Locarno’s Futuro Wool, winner of the Best Opera Prima Award at the last edition of the Locarno Youth Film Festival.

This morning, with the director present, the last film was presented in Bilbao. In the film, Nele Wohlatz is immersed in the personal drama of the lack of communication that many immigrants suffer because they do not know the language of the country where she lives, something that the author himself experienced when he arrived in Argentina from his hometown of Hanover, Germany. In this context, The Perfect Future describes the consequences of not understanding what others say and not being able to understand what one means.

The protagonist, Xiabón, is a 17-year-old Chinese girl who does not know a single word of Spanish when she arrives in Argentina. After a few days, he will have another name, Beatriz, and will work in a Chinese supermarket. His family works in a laundry room and lives in the same laundry room, a parallel world away from the Argentines. Xiabon secretly decides to save money and enroll in language school.

Nele Wohlatz (Hannover, 1982) is the screenwriter and director of this special film. A filmmaker with a strong relationship with the documentary, she shows us part of her personal experience in a Spanish language school in Argentina. To tell the story, he focuses his plot on the life of a young Chinese girl who wants to make a habitual life in that South American country and who will find the language barrier when it comes to relating.

The film has no professional cast, most of its protagonists are language school students. They will have the opportunity to pronounce the words and phrases they have learned by participating in the film. The objective of the experience is to accompany and acclimate the experiences of Xiabón, the real protagonist. Due to this dramatic procedure, the script is very curious and interesting. The film, which is a national premiere, will be screened this afternoon at 20:00 in Room 5 of the Golem – Alhondiga cinemas.
